Agreement Outlines Potential Future of Water and Wastewater Systems

At the March 21 Pagosa Springs Sanitation General Improvement District (PSSGID) meeting, the Board voted to approve a new agreement, known as a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), with the Pagosa Area Water and Sanitation District (PAWSD). The PSSGID consists of the same members who serve on the Pagosa Springs Town Council. The PAWSD board approved the MOU on March 14.

The PSSGID and PAWSD have a history of working together to address the community's water and wastewater needs. The MOU builds on this partnership by establishing a framework for the potential consolidation of the PSSGID into PAWSD along with the exploration of a new regional wastewater treatment plant at the southern end of Yamaguchi Park. The document will serve as a roadmap for the two entities, defining the potential issues, roles, responsibilities, and future steps to clarify the decision-making process for the respective boards.

Both entities acknowledge that there are items of mutual interest and agree to work collaboratively to move forward with a solution. A Working Group made up of PAWSD and PSSGID staff will be established to find solutions and pursue grants or loans to fund a possible new wastewater treatment facility.
